So, finally got into my ReadyNAS NV+ v2 and installed this patch. I did download and install the "Enable Root SSH access" add-on from http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24586
Then my SFTP connection to the NAS was to its IP address, user = root, password = my normal password to the admin console.
