I stopped the AE just now, it was still working fine after something
like 12hrs. When I started the test yesterday evening the AE stopped
after 1hr, then again after 1 or 2 tracks. So I increased the network
buffer to 1000ms, relaunched, and it ran just fine this time. AAC-only
playlist, no transcoding.
The AE is wired, it has a DHCP reservation with a fixed address and an
infinite lease. The DHCP server is on a linux VM on the Lan.

Then perhaps I cannot rule out a transient problem with access to the
music files? My LMS server is a linux VM which accesses the files via
NFS (over udp, server in the VM host machine.) I can't really say I ever
had problems playing music, but I have already seen the NFS server go
unresponsive for a little while. Unlikely, but a possibility.

The computing environment is not quite standard here. For further tests,
I could install a dedicated machine with a local drive. That would look
much more like a regular home setup.
I had in -indefinitely postponed- plan to reassemble the scattered bits
and pieces of a linux 32 bit x86 (Core Solo), 1GB RAM machine. This
should provide a reliable platform. Or I can acquire yet another Raspi 2
(these work so nice I keep giving them away it seems...)
Wouldn't be any bother. Just let me know.
