Well, it's always been a question of leaving enough space for accurate slider operation. If I significantly reduce the slider size on small iPhones you can no longer accurately set each value using the slider so people using the slider would have a problem.
I've added buttons on iPhone 6/7 sizes two years ago because there the space is available.
