Just noticed the arrow was inside the legend area when the latter is at the
right position:

//North Arrow on map
         $northArrow = $this->pdfSettings['north_arrow'];
          $imsize = getimagesize($northArrow);
          list($pixw, $pixh) = $imsize;
          $northArrowWidth = $pixw * $redFactor2;
          $northArrowHeight = $pixh * $redFactor2;

          //move arrow to the left if the legend is at the right position
          $legendPos = $this->pdfSettings['legendposition'];
          if ($legendPos == "R") {
            $this->Image($northArrow, $this->xLegStart-$northArrowWidth-10,
$this->topLineY+10, 0, $northArrowHeight);
            }
         else {
            $this->Image($northArrow, $this->xmaxM-$northArrowWidth-10,
$this->topLineY+10, 0, $northArrowHeight);
            }

**beware of the missing 'h' in my last message: $nortArrowWidth and
$nortArrowHeight
