Nathan Hale, famous soldier of the American said
the following, which may echo the feelings of certain
suicide bombers:
"...I only regret that I have but one life to
lose for my country. Could a 21-year old boy, barely
an adult, really summon so much eloquence in the face
of death? But older people may sometimes
underestimate the power and bravery of the young. The
last words appear to be a paraphrase from a play that
everyone was quoting at the time of the Revolution:
Joseph Addisons Cato, a drama about sacrificing ones
life for liberty."
So, the traditon of self-sacrifice goes back a
way. We doubtless would have volunteers if our
country were invaded as was Iraq. People tend to want
to take care of their own bad governors in their own
ways, and the results of bush's Krusade certainly
shows many reasons why this is so.
The militia (guerillas) of the colonists were
held in contempt by the European soldiers for not
being willing to stand up face-to-face with their
soldiers and mow one another down.
Should the Iraqis fight differently from our
ancestors?
