Of course you'll get no argument from me about the desirability of spending all that dough on alternative energy research! I would only point out however that it is too late for that, and our "leaders" know it. This is the endgame. Right now. Alternative energy research needed to be done in the 70s and 80s. As for the being better off simply having bought the oil from Saddam: perhaps so, perhaps not.
