Yes, it did. The last country to abolish slavery was the Ottoman Empire (Middle East) who had slaves both black and white right up until the early 1900's. The book I read was "Black Rednecks and White Liberals." I know, the title is very off-putting (if that's a word). But before anyone screams RACIST! based on that title, I urge them to research the author, Thomas Sowell.
They portray us like our Founding Fathers came over, set up shop, and sent for the slave boats. That's a flat out lie. We "inherited" the slave problem from prominent British colonists, who were to blame for spreading slavery throughout the western/new world. Another misconception, that freed slaves only owned other slaves because they were members of their families. Another half-truth. In 1965 in New Orleans alone, many prominent black citizens owned hundreds of slaves for profit, just like any other white plantation owner. I have just started researching this. I think we should all sue the public school system. Picking a book to read on this subject, and just about every other, is like walking through a mine field though. Liberals have their fair share of propaganda out there to be sure.
