It's a play on a commonly-seen US idiom. Large cargo vehicles that are
"common carriers" in that they carry things for others who pay them
("For Hire") must display a registration number and gross vehicle weight
on the truck. Towing vehicles that are "For Hire" also must do so. Large
vehicles that are used only by their owners are often carry the words
"Not For Hire" prominently.
Before I included that in my public .sig I got a few pleas per month for
help beyond what can be done via mailing list, in the mistaken
impression that I am an active consultant or otherwise available for
such work. I get fewer now.

OK. I'm not sure why that happened. My MUA must have believed that I did
something in that message that implied a need for HTML. I HOPE I've
corrected that (and found a bug...)
