In a typical null-client I'd expect local_transport to never happen,

This of course is true. And i realize it is default_transport i meant.

In this case all mail from null client goes to localhost, where $myorigin is governed by dovecot. So i think it is safe not to use the “detour” route via different ip ports but to use lmtp.

instead all mail goes via SMTP to the "smart" instance. But also,
being a null-client there would typicall also be no SMTP listener!

There isn't. I mixed up two instances in my answer.

Kind regards,
QNo
