You do not have to use the proxymap(8) service if your server is not busy and therefore unlikely to generate several concurrent mysql clients. From MYSQL_README: Busy mail servers using mysql maps will generate lots of concurrent mysql clients, so the mysql server(s) should be run with this fact in mind.
