I got rid of all the versioning stuff, cleaned out the old package and voila!
it worked.

I am though still fairly confident that this problem is due to some mishap on
my part, and not on Alan's script. I've used that script for a while
now, without
any issues.

But since I don't mind _not_ having the version hardcoded into various
pathnames,
I might as well get rid of them.
