Both these messages are from reject_unknown_client_hostname. Maybe consulting the docs will give a clue as to why one is 4xx and one is 5xx. http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#reject_unknown_client_hostname Also note that this restriction is known to reject a considerable amount of legit mail.
