Ralf did not necessarily imply that the vacation responder is a driver here. One might go on vacation and simply not want their inbox to act as a mailing list archive - their email provider may have tight space requirements as well. To expand on this option, it's not just for vacation. It's useful for those who read messages from a different source, like the archives or gmane, in which case the inbound traffic is just redundant.
