You didn't say, but since you mentioned dovecot, are you using dovecot sasl?

even without cache changing the password don't close existing
connections - i had AppleMail cients try to store a wrongly selected 4
GB video in the drafts folder again and again, changed password and
still OOM killers because existing client->dbmail-process connections
until hard restart the service
