I've at times set it as short as 2d (never less), but the RFC
requirement is at least 5d. A message sent on Friday afternoon
to a broken site with a weekday-only admin will under those conditions
bounce back on Sunday, but for some users more timely notification of
ultimate non-delivery is more useful than continuing to try after two
days. So in most cases stick with 5d, but if your users conduct
time-sensitive communications, being somewhat more aggressive may make
sense.
