I keep seeing "AW" prepended to message subjects and I have no idea
of what it means.

What does it mean?

Some MUA authors falsely assume that the string "Re:" at the beginning of
subject of a reply is a shortcut for the English word "Reply", and translate
that string. "AW" is an example of such translation. It is a shortcut for
German word "Antwort", which means "Reply".

It is a completely wrong concept, but you can still find it in some MUAs.
"Re:" actually comes from the Latin phrase "in re," which means "in the
matter of", so it should never be translated.

I'd just add that Outlook is apparently the main perpetrator here, unless you enable/disable some hard-to-find (for the average user anyway) option to enable/disable localized headers or such.

Plus most German web-mail systems (gmx) apparently do that too, which is also a pity..
