You're correct, and that did fix it. Their FAQ had it that way and I didn't question it. Theirs was the only dns name I've used that had the brackets around it, so I didn't realize it was important in both places. And after almost a week of talking this over with their support folks... Guess I'll let them know how to fix their FAQ.
