I am guessing that you have a "cs". That line is in
the area where the passive matrix scans intersect.

I am "hoping" that you have merely knocked the screen
cable partially loose and are experiencing partial
scans. 12 inches to carpet is not very much, usually.
I have dropped my 1400cs worse than that and suffered
no ill effects. (Other than a queazy stomach)

People have posted the links to the Apple Manuals here
recently. Reseating the cable requires little
disassembly. Replacing the screen takes much more.
