I can only speak from my experience with the 500 series, but my 540 has done this before--all kinds of crazy patterns started showed on the monitor. The problem was the video ribbon being loose at the connection to the monitor. Pressing gently on the monitor housing at the spot above the connector was all it took to reseat things--didn't have to open up the PB at all.
