I managed to stuff a FW card into my non-cardbus caged 3400, but it does me little good as the darn PB will run only OS 8.1.
A cardbus card has a narrower slot on one edge than a PCMCIA card. Holding a card with the top up and the interface* toward you, look at the right corner closest to you. An older PC card has a wider 'slot' and a thinner ridge than do cardbus cards. If you look at them together the difference is plain. (* by 'interface' I mean the row of 72 holes on the edge that goes into the card slot) I simply carved away enough of the plastic on that corner of the FW card that it now fits easily into a PC card cage. I'm not sure what electronic damage could be done to card or PB should I accidentally plug it into a non-cardbus bussed cage, but I've marked the card as "Cardbus Only!!" to remind myself. If the only functional difference between a PC card cage and a cardbus cage is that 'key', then it's a whole lot cheaper and easier to slice and dice the corner of a card than replace the cage. Now if only I could get my confounded Hooper to boot from a FW-capable OS I could actually try it out.
