Depends on how much RAM you have in it. If you're at 32 megs or higher,
definitely OS 8.1. The 5300 is far more stable under it than any version of
7.x.x, or at least it has been to me. The key to speed under OS 8 is to turn
off any extensions you don't need. It was a real slug under 8.1 when I
installed, but after putting on Speed Doubler and turning off the
extensions, it runs in about 8 MB of RAM and once it boots, feels more
responsive than under any version of 7.

Don't even consider 8.6 or 9.1 unless you have maxed out the RAM, or very
close to it.
