Well, later system software usually has more features, and more bugs fixed,
while older system software generally requires less resources.

Newer system software also has the advantage of having more native code
(even Mac OS 9 still contains some 68K code!), and thus running faster, but
this is usually offset by the greater complexity.

On the 1400, if your CPU upgrade is a Sonnet, you will want to avoid
anything between 8.1 and 9.1, as those versions contain a serious bug that
causes freezes.

I run 9.1 on my 333 MHz G3 1400, and it runs like a charm.
