John, I guess what it is now, now that I see the whole picture. This quote in particular: "don't remember the pauses being this annoying." The fact that 9.1 slowed your 7200 is not the issue-10 to 1. (I bet that IS a ram issue, or a v-ram issue, or a hd speed issue...etc. 10 to 1: Time to defrag and optimize your drive. I had the seem issue, increasing creepiness, pauses, trashing takes forever...on several machines. Buy TechTool 3, run disk optimization, then directory rebuild. Then do a fresh desktop rebuild.
