Similar thing happened to me and my 7600 G3. I had 10.0.4, went back to 9, then tried to install Jaguar later. I had to erase the drive inside OS X's installer before it would work. Apparently, unless you really erase the drive, some OS X files stick around and cause probs on re-install. This may not be you're issue, but it sounds awfully similar.
