When you did the 8.0 install was it a CLEAN install? I know you had to jump thru hoops to get the 8.1 update applied but it might be worth trying the 8.0 as "clean" if you didn't already. Trash all your OT, PPP, MAcTCPDNR etc prefs for sure and try dialing out again.
