What causes this? If I replace the power management board I don't want to have to go back and do it again in a few months ...

Having owned 2.5 of these machines for a couple of years, I persoanlly think that the 3400 doesn't have a very well designed PMU. So just bad design? This is just a hunch and I bet lots of more knowledgeable people (Malcolm???) on the list can be more specific.
On the other hand, lots of bits inside seem to come unplugged at every opportunity. Do open your s up and make sure everything is well-seated, esp the RAM card which seems to be particularly prone to coming ***just slightly** unseated and causing all sorts of wierd unrelated problems (like very slow boot, wakeup failures, crash-on-caps-lock-syndrome etc)
