Thanks Adrian: Your persistence made me check again in detail what's happening during my PB's startup, and I think I have now pinpointed the error.
The long wait is after the desktop appears, with volumes, files, and folders, but without windows of open folders; the menu bar is still blank. After a minute with quite some hardisk activity, the rest finally appears.
It occurred to me that this is very similar to the time and harddisk sounds of a desktop rebuild, so here's my new theory:
Somehow, the desktop is lost and has to be re-built at every startup.
So my question is now: Does this mean my harddisk is on the brink of collapsing, or is it something that can be fixed?

Also, what is in your startup folder? Anything unnecessary should be removed. -- Adrian
