It seems that the original matt finishing of the trackpad has been removed by use: is it possible?

Yup. The sign of a well-loved well-used machine.
On the other hand, if they meant to last forever, Apple would have stopped manufacturing PowerBooks with that model. After all, what would have been the point?

Maybe using the rest of the pad to make it equally shiny is the ticket.
(...Don't raise the bridge, lower the water!!!)

What's the problem with natural wear anyway?
Is it merely aesthetically offensive?
