Apple doesn't have the whole OS on their site. To be more precise, only the updates are available from Apple. Personally, and I've said this before, my take is to upgrade the system hardware, before downgrading the OS. My Lombard flies when I boot into 9.2, but it's not as productive for me. Then again, almost all my Mac experience was on 7.5.2, before I switched to my Lombard and OS X. Try borrowing a drive from a friend, or looking at replacing the CD-ROM drive. You still haven't mentioned which clock speed you're running, which would be a big help on which one is better. No Wallstreet is decent on OS X, without some serious money going to Sonnet, though.

Well, I hope you get 9 up.

So, realizing the error of my ways, I'd like to install OS 9. Any
thoughts on best way to approach this?

If you're returning to OS 9 totally, this is what I'd do in your
position. You will need: OS 9 bootable install CD.

1. Back up ALL of your data and applications, unless you already have
updated backups.
2. Boot with the CD and use Drive Setup to reformat your hard drive.
3. Install OS 9.
4. Reboot your Mac with the "new" OS 9 hard drive as the Startup Disk.
5. Restore your data to the hard drive from the backups.

There you go, all done. :-) Good luck and have fun.
