Duh. Didn't think of that. I was all set to put a meter to see what
voltage was being supplied to the motherboard. But given that even the
front panel's power button is another form of soft power, I can't
really isolate the motherboard unless I somehow make a little voltage
available to the wire that turns the power supply on. If I pull
everything off the board I have no way to get the power going.

Still thinking...

OK. The power supply supplies a trickle of power to the motherboard to
allow the keyboard or front button to power up the machine fully. So,
I'd have to find the soft power wire on the motherboard, pull it off
and short the wires (?) to simulate the pressing of the power button?
