I can't help with your problem. I have made my PTP an Apple hd using a
  9.1 disk.

But, I'm very interested in :

you have been able to start up from an external hd? Simply an attached
scsi?

Does anyone else do this? Doe anyone do this with an old iMac, using
usb?

Thanks,

Doug McNeill

Doug,
I don't think the connection matters. My main boot disk is an external SCSI
HD. Just make sure that you have the right drive set in your your "Start-up
Disk" control panel.
