SCSI is "Black Magic." I read some time ago, that there are a few rules, beyond all the known, obvious ones.
Try to put an empty spot between units. Avoid cheap cables. Put any external HD first, removable drive(s) second, and any scanner dead last. Put a terminal block on the 2nd SCSI connector of the last device. If there are still problems, reset the PRAM.
