I have a PTP 225 with Mac OS 9.1, a decent CD-R burner and Toast Deluxe
4.1.3. I want to make a CD-ROM that can boot the computer into Mac OS, like
the Mac install disks. The documentation makes it seem as easy as moving the
System Folder into the Toast window and selecting the option "bootable".
However, I have made "bootable" disks with my full 9.1 system folder, a 9.1
system folder stripped of all but the most basic extensions, even the system
folder that comes with the official Mac OS 9.1 Install disk. But all of
these disks either refuse to be recognized by the computer or crash the
computer after displaying the 9.1 logo, depending on what the computer feels
like that day. These same disks even crash my sister's NewWorld iMac. So
is it even *possible* to make a bootable disk on the PowerTower? Or just
not with 9.1? Would an older operating system, such as System 7.5.3, work
instead on the boot CD-ROM?
I will watch all responses to Jack's quandary because my local Mac dealer burned a system 7.6 disc for me which will not boot my PowerBase 180 yet will boot all my other Macs capable of running that particular system with no problem. I plan to set up a Ethernet LAN between the PowerBase and another older Mac in order to do the install of System 7.6 onto the PowerBase. I have tried everything from the "3-finger" key combo boot (Apple-Control-Shift-Delete) to Restart to C-key to cold start with the CD already in the CD-ROM Drive. Nothing will work! I'm not even sure the LAN Ethernet set-up will guarantee success but that's my next step. Hopefully, someone responding to Jack's appeal for help with his PTP 225 disc situation may shed some light on this issue.
