An alternative that leaves nothing to chance, is of course to start System Preferences - Accounts -- Startup items, then drag the version you want of SpamSieve into the window. If checking the "Hide" check box, all you'll notice is the SpamSeive icon in the dock. When opening Powermail, it uses the SpamSieve already running. (This is for Panther. In Jaguar i believe "Startup items" was called "Login Items" and found directly in System Preferences.) Perhaps this should be considered a "workaround" rather than a permanent solution, but this way I've never had any problems at all.
