Yes, I also suffer from this problem.  If it gets too difficult
I have to disable Preferences/HTML completely.  If all 3 Preferences/HTML
boxes
are ticked then this problem occurs frequently so most of the time
'Download external
picture if connected' remains unticked.  Unlike you, after the Force Quit
the message
can't be viewed without unticking the problem Preferences/HTML box.  
Viewing web pages on IE is no problem so I feel the problem must lie
somewhere 
within PM.
