Randy,

If a component or material is to be suspended in our spent fuel pool or
equipment pit and the dose rates are >1rem/hr @ 30cm in air, or >1rem/hr @
contact in water we incorporate the following controls.
Clearly label the lanyard, cable, or rope with a sign bearing the radiation
symbol and the words "CAUTION, RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL," and with sufficient
information to permit individuals handling the material to take precautions to
avoid or minimize their exposure (e.g., dose rate, contents, special
instructions etc.)
Obtain approval from the RPM or designee.
Establish one of the following controls to ensure that the material is not
raised near the surface or out of the water without RP authorization:
1) Station a guard in the area; OR
2) Provide physical measures to ensure that the material is not inadvertently
raised near the surface or out of the pool. Such as:

* Ensuring that the item can only be raised to the surface by use of
underwater handling tools, cranes or hoists.

* Providing a locking device that prevents the item from being raised.

* Providing a physical barrier which prevents access to the material.

* Locking all access points to the area.

Subject: Powernet: Highly Irradiated material stored in pool

When you store highly irradiated material in your pool, how is the lanyard
attached and how do you tag the laynard?
