At Diablo Canyon, we use the alarm test function on the GEM5s. We do all
detectors daily at 6" except foot detector @ contact.

We used to check the PM-7 by putting the source at the body position and
stepping into the monitor. INPO then decided that all tests would be done at 6
inches. With the PM-7, you can no longer stand in the monitor with the source
and obtain a distance of 6". You won't get the effects of background
suppression when a person stands in the monitor, but 6" is a common distance
decided upon.

The argos monitor has plastic scintillator detectors 3" behind the detector
grill. We perform the source check at 3" from the grill which would be 3" into
the chest cavity of a worker.

Traditionally, you'd follow the recommendations by the manufacturer, but now
INPO recommendations are overriding manufacturer recommendations. The key for
commercial power reactor people is to follow the recommendations by INPO and
try not to stray too far away from the manufacturer recommendations to also
keep the NRC happy.

Subject: Powernet: Portal monitor

Greetings all...

After attending the Canberra User's Group Meeting last week, it came to light
that some facilities perform the Daily Source Check on their Portal Monitors
differently.

Thus the basis for my question...

Does your facility source check each detector of your portal monitor using the
alarm test function(like the Argos or PM-7)?

Or

Do you source check your portal monitor by placing the source in the middle of
the monitor using the alarm test function?

Or

Do you source check your portal monitor by having a technician step into the
monitor (in normal) with the source on their person?

Or, something else?

Thanks in advance for your responses...
