Subject: Powernet: EDEX Compartment Usage Inquiry

Nine Mile Point is conducting a dosimetry focus self assessment. Any and all
information you can provide on the following effective dose equivalent external
questions would be greatly appreciated.

1. Does your plant use all seven compartments per Regulatory Guide 8.40,
Table 1 when using EDEX (i.e. every multipack has seven dosimeters)? TVA's
procedure allows for combining compartments as described in the Reg Guide as
long as the highest dose area is monitored. With the exception of diving, most
EDEx applications can be accomplished by combining compartments.

2. If "No" to #1 and your site combines compartments, what locations do
you group together? Because of the weighting factors most applications will
probably use thorax (W=0.38) and abdomen (W=0.5) with other compartments
combined or used as appropriate. For example:

1. If the dose is coming from above, the head will be monitored and arms
might also be monitored, but the legs will likely be combined with the abdomen.
Because the abdomen has a W=0.5 it would be monitored (rather than combined
with the thorax) to account for the dose gradient between the head, thorax and
abdomen.

2. If the dose is coming from below the worker, the legs, abdomen, and
thorax would be monitored but the head and arms would be combined with the
thorax (for W=0.38+0.1+0.005+0.005=0.49)

3. Has your site performed any calculations to determine the delta in
total EDEX dose using all seven dosimeters versus the overall dose using
combined compartments? If "Yes", would you be willing to share your results
with me at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>?
Not yet.

Thank y'all for your time. Have a wonderful day.
