There is a difference between there being an excess rounding error which is 
repeatable (and therefore very probably a genuine large rounding error) and 
one which is not repeatable (goes away when the run is restarted from the 
last savefile, therefore the hardware is definitely unstable).

If you have a hot CPU then you can very definitely have an unstable system as 
a consequence. However lots of current CPUs will throttle down to reduce 
current consumption (and therefore heat output) and/or turn up the fans at 
temperatures which are below the stability threshold temperature (unless the 
CPU is being overclocked!). You will probably notice a noisier and/or slower 
system before hardware problems become apparent.

Don't ignore the possibility of overheating northbridge controllers - 
especially those fitted with fans which may fail - or overheating memory.
