Sorry, I'm coming into this late, but I think I'm seeing the same or related issue. I have two different HP pcl printers (laser and inkjet). On either one
lp postscript-file works, but cat postscript-file | lp prints the postscript (I can see that lpsched calls postprint before gs). This thread seems to be about gedit, but this is going to show on any application that pipes to lp instead of passing the filename to lp. The open bug referred to is about evince, again a specific application. The bug I see is completely generic. Are we talking about the same bug? The only thing that is common to my two printers is that they use different foomatic drivers to render the postscript to pcl, and it looks like the foomatic infrastructure misidentifies input from a pipe.
