Actually, what everyone is requesting is the tool with which to conduct a data flow mapping analysis, as opposed to an actual flow chart. Many of the requests were mistakenly, I think, to a "Kristi", but I believe were meant for me. Several hours ago I sent out a reply which included an explanation of the name mix-up as well as the original posting that prompted all these requests, our data flow mapping tool, a guide for using the tool, and a brief overview of how we are conducting the project.
Unfortunately, I received an error message that the message was too large to post. I then consolidated the message and sent it again, but have not seen the posting, nor have I received an error message. If the posting has not materialized by tomorrow I will try again. Mapping your data flow refers to the process each covered entity should go through to determine a number of different items as part of that entity's assessment of its compliance with HIPAA . When an entity maps the data flow it identifies where, when, and how PHI enters the entities, who receives the PHI, where, when, how and with whom the PHI is shared within the entity and where, when, how and to whom the PHI is disclosed outside the entity. All of this is particular to the agency. For those CEs that do the same thing, another's data flow map can be helpful. But the entity must be sure to do its own data flow mapping. Moya T. D. We have been working to develop a questionnaire that can be used to identify how PHI flows through a department. It is tough to nail this down so it makes sense in all situations.
