I think the difference is: if you do a clean install, ie, you format the
disk and install Jaguar, you need to install OS 9 again before you do
it. But if you do an 'Archive and Install', which saves the old
installation of OS X in a 'Previous Systems' folder and moves all your
applications and documents to the new system, then you don't have to
install (or re-install) OS 9. I did an 'Archive and Install' and my old
OS 9 is fine, either as OS 9 or as Classic.
