Hence the confusion. In "old fashioned terms" (good old OS9 one's) a "clean
install" does not mean, or involve, formatting the disk.

Obviously if you do reformat, you will have nothing on the disk apart from
what you install from fresh. Hence the need to reinstall OS9.

I seem to remember (but can't be certain) that there is also another option,
apart from the Archive and install, where you can simply update the OSX
system. Without archiving it.
