Francis, Thank you for enlightening me to my naivety. But does not the 'good reliable supplier' also have to go to the same place (or one similar, and therefore open to similar abuse) to register domain names on your behalf ? And if so what's stopping them from doing it also ? I went to 'a good reliable supplier' (er hello 'Contact') and got them to register davidtownend.com. I didn't register davidtownend.co.uk. But that has now been taken....And if I ever wanted it, Contact told me 'I'd have to pay the man'. Whoever he is ? I am swimming in a sea of piranha's ! What to do ?
