David,

I believe this is standard among the cheaper name providers; they have
to make money somehow. People like Netnames ( and several others) charge
far more, but don't indulge in the rather dodgy practices. I guess it
all boils down to the old adage, "There is no such thing as a free
lunch" ?

To enlarge more on this, I have just renewed a .co.uk and it has cost me
50 quid for two years. I know that is a lot more than you paid, but
Netnames have been around for many years and offer one of the best
domain management services around. I consider my domains to be great for
my business and I want to hang on to them ( ever tried using a domain
name as a picture credit? - it works!) I know that the other sting from
cheaper providers comes when you want to transfer the name elsewhere, I
gather from a colleague that the figure bought tears to his eyes.
Netnames don't charge.

Best,

Nick WB.
