Dear David,
This is the way it works, I'm afraid.
When I first searched for some domain names and found they were free,
I logged off, had a think about it, logged back on to register one of them
and found that they had all been taken by a domain name company who then
offered to sell them back to me, at a price!
I have been told by people in the web business that this always happens.
There are programs operated by domain name companies which trawl for new
registrations and Inquiries and then gobble them up before you can register
them.
When you search, you need to register immediately, otherwise you'll lose it
to the 'net scum'.
Immoral but not illegal, sadly.
best wishes, mark
