Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your loss of data... but I must take issue with you on the above. I do not believe it is safe to assume that jewel cases are safe. Plastics in the case could in my limited understanding be equally critical to the survival of your media. I'm afraid I am simply not knowledgeable enough on this subject to recommend an alternative, though I am aware that you can buy special disks of a material that is supposedly designed to absorb the nasties (which may be released from plastics in gaseous form) before they get through to your CD. Also, consider that newer CD readers may on occasion have problems reading the older CD-R's... so it _may_ be worth you trying a different CD reader or five. This may be worth considering too when purchasing media. I see a lot of incompatibilities in certain blank media - "Cannot be played on DVD players" etc etc - and all sorts of other caveats. The problem is... what if there are only DVD players in future? Just more questions rather than answers I'm afraid...
