Hi David,
Sorry for telling it like it is :-)
The statement I was referring to was
>Unfortunately it just seems to be one of the minor

There are some minor disadvantages of shooting digitally ( client
prejudice etc ) , and some major ones ( investment etc ). But the banding
referred to is not an issue on all digital camera systems , so it would
be unfair to say that it is a disadvantage of shooting digitally without
qualification.
>Any other digital charlatans out there ?
Where shall I start :-) ?
Seriously though , at the end of the day it's horses for courses. The
portability of 35 mm body type digital cameras and their relative
affordability make them attractive to some for some types of commissions
, but it's unfair to place the more stringent demands of certain other
jobs on their shoulders.
It's on these jobs where the limitations become apparent. We've been
shooting high res high speed water shots for the past two weeks and the
new camera system has produced outstanding results that just couldn't be
achieved by other existing systems. The upside is the joy of the images,
the downside is the eyewatering (no pun intended ) cost of the system.
No matter how much we all want digital cameras to be all singing all
dancing top quality devices available at knock down prices , the reality
still is that ultimate quality still comes at a price. Just how much we
are prepared to compromise that quality is the sum of all the variables.
( Economics,availability ,portability,fee structure,personal taste,
personal views re 'just good enough' versus obsessive pursuit of image
quality, suitability for the job in hand.......even that small matter of
swings tilts and rising fronts, wide angle lenses , storage , image
compression etc etc etc....)
When more smudgers take the leap , economies of scale will kick in and
we'll all benefit. In the meantime , I think that it's important to look
at the bigger picture rather than become overly protective about our
digital pride and joys.
And , sensibly of course,no matter what our obsession with kit ,it's
always important to keep a little aside, where possible ,for whatever
other distractions we may have ( BTW ..still accepting donations for the
"Mythical Boat
Fund ")
Have a good weekend,
Regards,
Bob Marchant.
