Paul , just out of interest , how wide was the sunny strip , in percentage terms of the frame area ? and was the light bit over exposed and the dark bit right ? or the otherway round ? . Its a senario that I shoot in quite often , with pretty good results from > S2.

Width?
about 2m and running the full length of the mat (which is light cream) i.e. about 15m sq.?
The girls were often out of the sunlight, but as mentioned, due to the fact they occasionally ran though the light it needed to be on auto.
I tried matrix, which was about a stop out when in the shade and produced almost a shillouette when backlit....film experiences with matrix were better than this.
Spot metering was better, but eventually I relied on viewing a histogram and quickly rotating the shutter wheel as they approached the sunlight!
All the "auto" shots required lightening in levels
I exchanged views with Mike Russell a few weeks ago, because even when used in the studio it is 1 1/2 stops out against a meter.
The VR certainly seemed to work, you could see the image jump a little when you activated the shutter......but in the absence of the manual...maybe I've got a steady hand :)
I'll get to the bottom of it eventually....its just a bit frustrating when the results aren't exposure wise, as goo as a pointy shooty coolpix or fuji 60x...could do with out the hassle.
I waiting for Martin from fuji to come and see what I'm doing wrong!
I'll send you an original image if you wish... .
Gotta go
