Why would anyone want to do that? Unless using the card for transferring
other data. 

For camera use, just stick it in a camera, format it, and bingo. I regularly
reformat the cards as well, on the 10D. Just to keep them clean.

As above. I use 4 different microdrives, in a D60 and a 10D. They read fine
on a mac running 10.2. I'm sure they'd read fine in OS9 as well. Just format
the cards in the camera - there is no need or desire to format them from the
computer.
